n95 Map Loader Problem – Solved!

03Sep07

Today I spent a lot of time playing with my phone. I sent geotagged photos using Shozu to my flickr account while being near access point’s (hot-spot’s) in Plaza shoping centres in Rybnik.

When I returned home I had another thing to do. My maps hadn’t been working yet, so I had to download the new ones.

First I got Nokia Maps Upgrade for n95 and Nokia Map Loader for my PC, from: http://europe.nokia.com/A4509291

If you don’t have that piece of shit which is Microsoft dotNET Framework in version 3.0, you’ll get a popup that you have to download that.

Install and run all the apps.

And this is where trouble begins. After opening Map Loader I’ve got a popup “The map data on your device is not compatible with the map data available through Nokia Map Loader” and the only thing that I could download to my phone was the navigation voice.

After half an hour I found a solution. On drive E: of your phone (memory card) you’ll find a file called simply ‘qf‘. Edit it with a notepad. I don’t know if it stores also some extra information about the phone so I won’t show here mine, but the only thing you have to do is to change voice_mode into map_mode in this file.

Save it and try again sending maps onto the phone. Mine works excelent πŸ™‚

I’ve almost forget: I’m using the upgraded nokia maps 1.2 on my phone.

[UPDATE: 13.12.2007] 9 steps to heaven

Installing Nokia Maps on your n95/n95 8gb – algorithm that leads to 100% success.

(You can try to omit the point 1 & 2 on the beginning – if it won’t work turn back to point 1 and do the whole procedure)

1. Format your memory card.

2. Format your phone with code *#7370#

3. Install Nokia Maps Upgrade for n95 from http://europe.nokia.com/A4509291 – (if you have n95 8gb with firmware v11 or n95 with firmware v20 probably no update is needed)

4. Run once program Maps from phone menu and turn it off

5. Connect your phone by USB in Mass Storage mode

6. Run Nokia Map Loader on your computer ( download it from http://europe.nokia.com/A450929 )
7. Select the maps that you are interested in and hit download. Wait to the end of the process. Turn of Nokia Maps Loader

8. Click the green icon near your system clock and use safe unplug function to unplug your device properly.

9. Start your Nokia Maps app on your phone and enjoy high quality maps!

  1. I haven’t had any device that would give me so much fun for years. I gotta admit that map loader is a nice feature, I had a little look at your uploaded photos on flickr. Also it’s obvious I have to congratulate you on solving the problem with compatibility. The solution seems easy and it really is easy, but the greatest thing is to resolve problems by oneself, isn’t it? πŸ™‚ Good job, man!

Let’s go into things we like less πŸ˜‰ that is English.
    Two errors were made there:
    1) this is were→this is where
    2) a half of an hour β†’ half an hour

Everything else looks good and understandable. Improving English skills is nice, that is really what I think. Oh, by the way, which one’s Pink? πŸ˜‰

    Hi,
Help me with it. Where can I find the file qf and also I am not able to see start up animation and zoom on the globe using my nokia Maps application.
    Raul

  3. 3 Raul

Also I could not find the file called qf on my mobile memory card.

  4. 4 masteranza

Probably the file is hidden. You have to uncheck the ‘hide protected files’ radio box in explorer preferences. Raul, please leave me an e-mail or sth if you want to be helped by me.

Thanks, another solution which I tried was deleting the \private\20001f63 dir on the phone (show hidden files) then restarting the phone, use the application maps once and connect again in data transfer mode. I used maploader 1.2.1. It worked fine aswell

…doesnt work for me! Still get the error message “…map data is not compatible”!
    what the hell is wrong??
any ideas?? …please i need help!

  11. 11 Chris

Thanks a lot it diden’t work first time around, but doing the delete maps from storage and restarting map loader did it, I tried this before with no luck

  12. 12 David

I’m having this same problem with my N95 8gb. I think it’s a problem with the Nokia map loader program. I’ve tried changing the qf file, but it reverts back to voice_mode every time I reopen the maps program…

Anyone have a workaround that works??

  13. 13 John

Hey I have the same problem. I downloaded the new version of Map Loader on my N95-3 & it only lets me install the voice language. I have no access to maps. I changed the qf file from voice_mode to map_mode & still no luck. I don’t know what else to do. Masteranza if you can please help me, I’d really appreciate it…. hotjohn19@hotmail.com.

    Thanks

I think this is a new issue created by either the new firmwares for the N95 Classic/8Gb or Map Loader 1.3.0 or both.

I’ve just spent >1hr on the phone with Nokia Customer Care formatting memory cards, uninstalling/reinstalling/uninstalling map loader, etc etc. And STILL I have the same issue.

Anyone with this issue should be encouraged to contact Nokia Customer Care to highlight this issue.

Another issue is with Map Loader 1.3.0 – it constantly tells me there’s an update… to version 1.3.0!

  15. 15 marco

I have the same problem with nokia map loader in Italy. I phoned yesterday to Nokia technical support. They confirmed me that there is a bug into map loader software 1.3 and they signalling it to Finland Nokia head office.
We need to wait a new release.
    Bye

  16. 16 Karsten

I tried Version 1.0 (Sorry folks, I did not found a newer one in the web ;))

It can be downloaded here, one friendly guy provided it on his webpage:
    http://sjc-123.blogspot.com/2007/07/gps-nokia-maps-and-mobile-gmaps.html

With the newest map and firmware updates this worked fine for me.
At least I am able to download maps and they are working πŸ™‚

  17. 17 Veli-Matti Vuorela

    Thanks for the interesting research!

I completed steps 1-6 but I still get the same answer:
“The map data on your device is not compatible with the map data available through Nokia Map Loader”
    I also manipulated the gf-file.

    I got firmware 20.0.015
    Nokia maps 1.0
Map loader 1.3 (still persist that I update to version 1.3 even it is already installed)
and memory card is 1GB Kingston.

I have spent 16 hours with this dilemma so far…
    …and continues

  18. 18 masteranza

So probably that’s nokia’s internal problem and I can’t help. Perhaps try to change a product code and install another firmware?

  19. 19 Janet

    Hi,

Thank you I have the maps at last.

Could you please help with something else?

I can zoom in and scroll on the map but it will not find any addresses, it just states not found.

I used to be able to do routes before the upgrade now it cant.

    Cheers Jan

  20. 20 masteranza

try to enter your country again, sometimes it just doesn’t work for first time from some reasons.
If you can, write more details

  21. 21 Janet

    Hi,
I don’t understand where to put the country again.

I have the maps working. I can see streets

ok open maps, do not use network, streets are visible
options find place address type address search no results found. but i can manually navigate. withe the arrow but that does not help.

Should I just download Google maps 2.1 from the internet and try them??

  22. 22 Hman

    Hi,
I had the same problem with the map loader β€œThe map data on your device is not compatible with the map data available through Nokia Map Loader” tried masteranza’s suggestions and both didn’t work. I even rang nokia service centre(twice) which was of no use. After numerous re-installs and phone resets finally got some relief!!

I followed Karsten’s suggestion and downloaded Maploader Version 1.0, this partially worked, for some reason I could download maps but not the map for my own country(Australia). The map for Australia was on the list but would not let me select it 😦 I then installed Nokia Maploader V1.3 without uninstalling V1.0(don’t ask me why I did this I have no idea) for some reason this worked and I was able to run Maploader V1.3 without getting that stupid Comapatible data error. Also the great thing about running the Maploader now is it doesn’t keep asking me to download the latest update.

A big thanks to masteranza and everyone who posted as this help get my GPS working again. _b

  23. 23 Karsten

It seems that Nokia has updated the version of the MAP Loader they provided on their homepage. If anybody still has troubles, plz try to download the version of the maploader currently available at Nokia.

  24. 24 masteranza

If so, I can’t help anymore.

  25. 25 666

Nokia Maps is a great free navigation app, but Nokia Map Loader is a horrible program. To make things worse, it needs hundreds of megs worth of .net framework. Imagine you need to get a local map on your phone in an internet cafe that won’t let you install any software on their machines…

But now you can add maps without the bulky bloated Nokia Map Loader. Works on PC (Windows, Linux, doesn’t matter) and Mac. If your phone talks WiFi or if you have unmetered 3G you don’t even need to touch a computer to add maps to your memory card!

Links to all maps and instructions on http://nokiamaps.moo.no

  26. 26 qwazix

    another solution

    1. delete qf file
    2. run nokia maps on device
    3. connect usb (data transfer)
    4 run map loader again

  27. 27 Tudor

thank you so much, i changed the qf files and it seems to be worked, i downloaded my country’s map, tomorrow i will try another one but so far it seems to be working. I have been knocking my head against the walls for the last 3 days, reading forums, posting pleas for help and asking nokia customer service to help me. you are the best.
    tudor

  28. There’s one even better way to install maps. There’s no need to install any kind of applications like .net and map loader which is only for windows. You just go to http://nokiamaps.moo.no/ and download the maps you want and voila! πŸ˜‰

  29. 29 republik163

a solution that worked for me with my N95

Install Nokia Map loader (NML) from http://www.nokia.com/betalabs/maps
    > NML will ask for latest PC suite (Nokia Nseries PC Suite is part of the problem i had this installed but i did need to uninstall it in this fix)
Install Nokia PC Suite from http://europe.nokia.com/A4144905

Run freshly installed PC Suite and select NML icon, select and download maps to memory card as required.

You may need to map N95 drive to E:/ as that seems like default expected Mcard drive location for E:\cities\diskcache folder which is needed, why Nokia??

    Good luck!

  30. 30 republik163

    Hi, to correct a typo..

..had this installed but i did NOT need to uninstall it in this fix)

so NO need to uninstall the Nokia Nseries PC suite if you have that installed, just install the latest Nokia PC Suite in addition, worked for me…

  31. 31 Li

I am sorry to say I got the same problem.
After running nokia map loader and connect to my phone (E71), only the option of “voices” can be seen, no way to download maps!

I tried to change qf file as told, which does not help in my case..

  32. 32 farid

    Dear Friends
